VANTASTIC AFTERNOON
Stock Car and Banger action featured twice over the weekend
at the Norfolk Arena with the stock cars taking centre stage
on Saturday night but the Bangers stole the show on Monday
afternoon with the Unlimited Van Bangers in particular thrilling
the crowds with their larger than life crashing antics.
Starting with the Saturday night action, a total of 38 BriSCA
F1 Stock Cars gathered for the King’s Lynn round of World
Championship qualifying with a fine supporting cast of 34
National Saloon Stock Cars. In the opening heat for the F1’s,
there were three different leaders Of the first few laps of
the race with 441 John Lawn, 8 Mick Harris and 55 Craig
Finnikin all scrapping for the lead until they all tangled together
on the home straight and crashed out. This left 380 Steve Cayzer
to come through and take the win although Harris made amends
by taking a more cautious run to victory in the second heat of
the evening. 231 Mark Peters dived to the front of heat three
on the second lap and remained there to take the win by a
considerable margin and he also looked set to win the Final which
he was leading by several car lengths when a mistake saw him
crash out of the race and into the wall. This left three of the top
drivers to produce an amazing last bend finish to the race when
World Champion 1 Stuart Smith Jnr lunged at the leading 16 Matt
Newson forcing both cars wide and resulting in a side by side
sprint to the line. Many spectators believed that Newson reached
the line first by the narrowest of margins, but the telemetry on
the Cars pronounced Smith as the winner from Newson and
Cayzer. Peters became the only driver to win twice on the night
when he romped away once again to win the Grand National.
In the saloon stock cars, a fairly wet track caused havoc in the
opening race of the night with the top three drivers in the early
stages all coming unstuck when 390 Michael Hubbert ran 754
Eamon Howden into the parked car of 369 Andy Santry costing
them all considerable time and allowing 562 Trevor Gray to
