WIERD WEATHER & WACKY RACES
The annual Wacky Races Banger fixture went ahead at the
Norfolk Arena on Easter Monday featuring a whole range of
wacky Banger racing events. Conditions for the racing ranged
from glorious sunshine to slippery snow showers but the drivers
made a fantastic job of entertaining the hardy crowd with a
great show.
The formula with the least novelty factor were the under
1500cc Bangers who were contesting their annual
Commentator’s Cup day. The best of the cars on show in this
category were the stunningly painted Mk3 Ford Cortina of 178
Mark Cooke and the Mk2 Ford Escort raced by 791 Nicky Young. As
well as these elderly cars, there were also some very smart cars on
display including the Rover 216 of defending cup-holder, 999 Shane
Cottrill, the Mazda 323 of 331 Barry Chilvers and the Rover of 292
Keith Saunders. The field of over 40 drivers contested two Heats
and a Final with the highest aggregate scorer of the day lifting
the Commentator’s Cup at the end of it all. The first heat saw a
big pile up at the start which limited the opportunity for any
individual drivers to stand out for their crashing ability in a race
which was won by 788 Daniel Burton.
The second race was much more lively and featured some good
hits from 611 Joe Geeves and 385 Roy Gedge but the performance
of the race came from 525 Wesley Starmer who managed to wipe
out three other cars with his antics. 337 Ashley Garrod was the
winner of this race. The Final was held in near-blizzard conditions
which didn’t help the drivers with grip on the shale circuit.
Starmer continued his fine crashing performance but was also
joined by Jason Chilton who pulled off a decent crash. Most drivers
were chasing the points by this stage however and a close race was
ended with 333 James Cooke winning ahead of 88 Ashley Burton and
515 Gareth Flatters. Second place was enough for Ash Burton to add
to his earlier scores on the afternoon and he ended the day as the
fifth different name to be engraved onto the Commentators Cup in
as many years. Highlight of the destruction derby which closed the
