DEVASTATING UNLIMITED BANGER
ACTION
had been hit so hard by 168 Calvyn Girling that it rolled
over on impact and this started a trend for later races
when Ireland’s 357 Carl McClure was tipped over by a
big hit from Team Predator favourite 879 Reg Reed. A
variation on the theme in the eighth heat saw Stinkbridge
man 451 Willy Blackwell invert his own car by delivering
a length of the straight hit to 886 Adrian French from
the Gilmorton Red Devils team and then The Undertakers
captain 361 Chris Walden did the same by rolling himself
in the act of burying the unlucky Preece into the wall.
As far as the team championship went, the Allstars 1
team consisting of 19 Joe Mullarkey, 159 Darren Scarrow,
211 Barry Franklin and 372 Martin Scully made the early
break for victory scoring 27 out of a possible maximum
of 34 points in the first round of heats. However, only
Scully would score any further points in the later races
with Mullarkey instead concentrating his attentions on
winning two entertainers trophies for his lively crashing
performances.
This allowed defending champions, Team V, to make up
for a slightly wobbly opening round by scoring the highest
number of points of any team in the second and third
rounds of heats and completing a massive victory by being
the only team to get more than one driver to the finishing
line in the Final. The team therefore became only the third
team in history to successfully defend the Icebreaker title,
proving the value of their team decision to supplement the
usual Cumbrian based drivers (474 Matty Threlkeld and
310 John Nicholson) with 262 Buddy James and 901 Mike
