HEAVY ACTION AT FIRST ICEBREAKER There was major Banger racing action at the Norfolk Arena over the weekend when the first part of the Icebreaker XV meeting was staged. The initial part of the meeting was the 4-a-side British Team Championship for under 1500cc Bangers which attracted 112 Bangers to the Norfolk Arena spread across 31 different teams, some of which didn’t have a complete squad of drivers. Teams came from as far afield as Yorkshire, but the vast majority of the success went to more local teams from Lincolnshire and East Anglia. The awards determined before the meeting went to the Mad Mob (236 Rob Everett, 128 Andy Lack, 331 Barry Chilvers and 791 Nicky Young) who were the best presented team and to Boston based Mr Men who took the award as the “material” team with their line up of unusual cars including a Talbot Avenger for 579 Gary Beecham, a 1970s Colt Lancer for 282 Bobby Daniels and a late ‘60s Saab 95 Estate for 578 Lee Ranshaw. Other individual rare car awards went to 390 David Gibson and 76 Terry Mansfield who both turned out Ford Capris for the event.
Teams raced 3 times each over 10 tough heats of action before all remaining drivers were invited to contest the Final. The opening race saw lively exchanges between local rivals Team Black and The Predators with Team Black captain 385 Roy Gedge nailing 776 Ady Groom only to take a big revenge hit from 115 Chris Wagg. However, the most entertaining performance came from Team Crash and 90 Simon Chapman whose major burial of 352 Stu Brooks and a bit hit on 517 Chris Gould earned him an entertainer trophy for his efforts. 551 Stuart Franklin won for the Allstars but three places in the top ten gave Yarmouth team Beevors Allstars an early points advantage.
