STOCK CAR WEEKEND IS BEST
OF THE SEASON SO FAR!
The Norfolk Arena staged two days of racing over the weekend
with the Saloon Stock Car British Championship forming the main
focus of the programme over both days whilst the BriSCA F1
Stock Cars contested a National Series Round on the Saturday
night and the Saloon racing was supplemented by National
MiniStox and 2 Litre Banger action on the Sunday. 219 Luke Grief
produced a stunning drive to win the British Title in the saloons
having qualified in pole position on the race grid whilst 259 Paul
Hines won his first ever shale track Final in the F1 Stock Cars
giving his National Series challenge for 2008 a boost.
Looking firstly at the Saloon Stock Cars, the British Championship
drew together an impressive entry of 53 drivers representing all
regions where Saloon Stock Car racing is currently prevalent,
namely East Anglia, Scotland, The Westcountry and Northern
Ireland. The drivers each raced in three of the five qualifying
heats run in the first phase of the weekend with 25 drivers
earning automatic entry to the Championship from their race
scores. A last chance event then gave all remaining drivers the
chance to earn a top 9 position in a one-off shoot-out race for
the remaining Championship slots.
The qualifying process turned out to be particularly hard-fought
and spectacular with all drivers using their bumpers hard and
taking no prisoners whatsoever on track. Lynn racer 562 Trevor
Gray made a good start to the opening heat of the weekend
using his skills to negotiate the freshly-watered track surface
although as things dried out, it was Luke Grief who came
through from his starting position at the back of the grid to start
his weekend in the best possible fashion with a victory. The
second race was a close contest throughout the 16-lap distance
with 86 Simon Royal holding off the chasing pack for much of the
way, only to be passed in the late stages by 186 Todd Jones.
